The Virginia General Assembly in late February adopted that state’s first regulations for kratom by unanimous vote, according to ABC 8News, Richmond.

  • Sales in Virginia will be banned to anyone under the age of 21. The original version of the bill would have banned the sale of kratom to anyone under the age of 18 and would have required manufacturers to certify the purity of the product.

  • A spokesman for the American Kratom Association stated that the industry advocates regulation out of concern for the availability of adulterated kratom and the need to keep the product safe.

  • Opposition to the original bill had cited an FDA report suggesting that kratom was dangerous even in its pure form. However, the report did not recommend a ban, instead urging caution by consumers pending further study.

  • Under the new regulation, manufacturers are required to add a label reading, “This product may be harmful to your health, has not been evaluated by the FDA, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

  • The American Kratom Association (AKA) said it welcomed the new law.
